I guess, if I had to describe myself in terms my spiritual siblings will understand, I would say that I am an old hippie, given that the word "hippie" is best described as a mind set. I am talking about a mindset from which many spiritual paths blossomed, scientific inquiry exploded, the old became new again and a majority of ordinary people were exposed to new information at ever-growing speeds and in formats so numerous as to be dizzying.
Unfortunately the same can be said for misinformation and disinformation. (That was certainly to be expected, as that is has it has been down through history when any new technology has made acquired knowledge available to the masses.)
In my day, it was television that would rock so many individual, communal, state and national worlds with information called news and information from what was called entertainment.
Most Hippies I knew and know were and are politically independent, as socially responsible as possible, given their means, personally frugal and generous, not drawn to vengeful, nasty political battles, knew that peace had to begin with them....that they had to become the change they wanted to see.
Hippies have become successful business men and women, while not betraying their fundamental belief system. Others have become scientists, computer and Internet pioneers, leaders in psychological healing and spiritual growth, researchers in many fields, including sociology, social psychology, addiction science and recovery, social work, and others, great artists in every medium and many, many unsung peacemakers in towns, villages and cities all over the world.
Coming of age in the 60s I watched three assassinations change the course of history and not for the better. I also watched the nation seem to damn near come unglued in the years that followed 1968.
