Brave New World by Aldous Huxley.

This isn't the difference between a good hornist and a bad hornist. It's the difference between a hornist at full strength and a tired one. I'd still hire the tired one despite the squeezed high B. Up until that point, he has a wonderful sound.

It looks more like it broke at the tailpiece, not the bridge, although it happens so fast it's hard to tell. It appears as though the bridge falls off the instrument in one piece, but again, it's so fast that it could have snapped and we'd never have seen the other piece go flying.

Sadly, the only proper version of this is the actual published version. It's completely and utterly impossible to play, but it's still published.

You -might- be able to do this with 4 pianos/8 hands. It's just entirely too busy otherwise. And besides, it's meant as a player-piano piece or as a ...

This is one of those pieces which I play for people who say they don't like "modern" classical music. It's impressionist, dissonant, noisy, and raucous - but when you say it's a musical train ride, they GET IT.

It's clear that he either enjoys the side effect of the bath midway through (no more itching!) or simply resigns himself to having to put up with it. But yes, he is positively COVERED in fleas...poor thing must've been miserable.

@atpal I agree. The chart really isn't even Just Friends, it's basically an extended solo written for the band as a unit. Unless you happen to recognize the changes as Just Friends, you won't even catch the brief mention of the head he throws in at the beginning.

I've got a copy of the chart itself (the original manuscript). This chart absolutely ROCKS. It's also hard as hell to play - you have to be INCREDIBLY solid in your time to negotiate the time changes from 5/4 to 7/4 to 8/4 later in the piece.

@katella12 I feel very fortunate - Jim was my combo instructor at one of the Jamey Aebersold jazz camps down at UofL a few years ago. Positively brilliant player, and a heck of a guy. I learned a ton just from listening to him play, to say nothing of what he could tell you.

Absolutely incredible chart. I have the full transcription of this that was published -very- briefly, and it's one of the most enjoyable tunes in our book to play. This tune just oozes that infamous 1970s style of cool!

Positively -gorgeous- trombone playing. Wish I had a transcription of this version instead of the sax version - the backing is better on this one by a country mile.
