New footwear technology that significantly increases traction on ice versus traditional rubberized soles.
Here is a brief summary and rough generalization of how it is formed and how it works:
Micro glass filaments and a composition of rubber and other compounds are combined in liquid form. While the molds for the soles are poured and heat curing, the glass fibers are ionized and then aligned by an electrostatic field.
The glass fibers now protrude through the bottom of the sole. While they are next to invisible to the naked eye, the micro nature allows them to grip the naturally occurring pores within the ice itself.
As the sole wears, the glass fibers continue to be exposed and the "gripping" properties remain intact through the life of the shoe. Initial tests also indicate that it does not harm finished floors or carpet unlike that which spiked shoes may have a tendency to do.
