spur gears being meshed always have a grimy noise at higher speeds, but the gear making the noise by itself is probably a bad bearing.

@lrjewela a BOV is for "more" sound, generally. if you want to relieve the pressure in your intake without the blowoff or dump sound, you'd buy a regular PRV, which isn't meant to be as noisy.
