It's what we call the moon cycle. If the moon is half moon is showing then the earth is blocking the light half the light to the moon...now when it a full moon the sun light is hitting all the moon, it happens every month...and to confuse you more if there is two full moons in one month is called...

The smaller one isn't a moon, it's Jupiter wich is at about 10 degrees from the moon. This was state on spaceweather (DOT) com website. Jupiter as at it's closet to earth making it look like a 2nd moon, but it not.
