  If you are cutting thin strips or cuts without sharp curves the wider blades work better about 1 inch or more. Should offer straighter cuts without much drift
  
  A narrow blade is more for curves, the narrower the blade the tighter the curve.

I took my 6 inch face plate mounted a 3/4 inch thick piece of scrap hardboard with bolts and lock nuts then glued a leather round i got from Tandy smooth side out then i loaded it with Tripoli Compound Bar then put it on the lathe

when you hook up the shop-vac to it i would leave an opening in it somewhere to relive some of the vacuum pressure on the motor ..... it will still remove the shavings and not stress on the motor
