Looks to me like the guy behind him was having just as much trouble with traction, though not as dramatically. It's all about the tires regardless of the drive-line setup. You stop and turn better with snow tires as well, something AWD, RWD, or FWD has zero effect on.

This is people need to wise up and buy snow tires! Cheap extra insurance(better turning and stopping ability) and I guarantee he would have made it with snow tires. A RWD car might have even been able to make it.
