Same here I always thought Channel 4 covered this race. How times have changed with the BBC now virtually ignoring horse racing.

She sure was some mare we will never see another like her great post.

For me this is the best ever running of this race. The winner was top class and won the Benson and Hedges at York during an injury prone three old career and of course we all know what the second horse went on to achieve.

I have not seen this in years, how did Nureyev lose this race he done nothing wrong. I have seen worse interference and the culprit kept the race amazing verdict.

Some great names from the past there Wayward Lad was a great chaser just never seemed to like Cheltenhamas surely he had the class to win a Gold Cup.

Again a great video I did not know that so many old favourites ran in this race particularly West Tip who finished third. The winner won easily and who would have guessed that the runner up in this race would come back the following season to win the Champion Hurdle.

Funny sequence of events in this race over the years, Dessie falling here, Dawn Run fell in 1986 and Imperial Commander fell this year all after winning the Gold Cup on their previous start.

Thanks for these two pieces of rare video I have not seen them before, Golden Cygnet I think would have proven to be one of the greats only for his tragic early demise in the Scottish Champion Hurdle.

You are right this race will always be The Massey Ferguson Gold Cup. It is strange to see so few runners in this race compared to the competitive handicap it has become today.

I think it was Richard Pitman On Pendil, 1973 just was not his year, this race and Crisp in the Grand National.

What a greta performance by this horse. It is a pity we never got a chance to see him in a Gold Cup.

What a battler Dark Ivy was if I am not mistaken he had finished runner up to Dawn Run with Buck House back in third on his previous run to this race.

It is hard to believe now that Dessie was available at that price, but he was the outsider of the stables two runners. I backed the other one Coomes Ditch who Colin Brown preferred to Dessie.

Yes Kribensis was one of the few really class hurdlers to win a Triumph Hurdle, even See You Then managed to get beaten in the race. But I think we will see a a better class of winner in future now that the Fred Winter Hurdle is also run at the festival.

Yes The Irish National always a great race to watch. This was one of the biggest upsets ever in this race but it was certainly historic for Ann Ferris who won the Sweeps hurdle on Irian a few years earlier.

None of todays top chasers would be capable of doing anything near that performance in a top handicap like Dessie does here.

What a great race with some all time favourite chasers involved. Coombs Ditch was a great chaser and i think Colin Brown prefered to ride him rather than Desert Orchid when Dessie won his first King George
