Much like the Turks, the Bulgarian government recognzied FYROM only because they thought they could leverage the situation for future land gains (as a sort of extension of the Balkan wars, WW2, and Greek communist civil war when ethnic Bulgarian IMRO organization encouraged "united Macedonia").
I don't think they fully appreciate Bulgarians are under even more threat than Greece. For FYROM's narrative as Macedonians to be "real"... they need to rewrite Bulgarian history just like they do Greek .They've already lost 1/4 of their population to "Macedonianism"
