We have a moral obligation to be creative in the ways we bring about peace. The "Arab Spring" brings with it great dangers and great opportunities for peace in Israel/Palestine. Working with our European partners, and the Palestinian leadership, the UN vote in September could be an opportunity for mutual recognition. The reality is changing. We cannot afford a failure of imagination this time around. This is a non-zero sum game... We must find a way to have our cake, and share it too.

INDEPENDENCE CAN ONLY WORK IF WE RECOGNIZE OUR INTERDEPENDENCE. If we do this right, both sides will enjoy an enormous peace dividend.By building mutually interdependent social, cultural, and economic institutions, we create incentives for prosperity on all sides, and establish alternatives to conflict. It is in our interest (speaking as an ardent Zionist), that we partner with the Palestinians to create something they will think twice about losing in a fight with us.

No one is going anywhere. That is the reality. So we must teach each other to win non-zero sum games.

PALESTINIAN INDEPENDENCE IS COMING. That is the new reality, but it's an opportunity for everyone. Both Palestinians and Zionists must learn to define themselves in terms of what we create, not in terms of our struggle with the Other. The world is just to interconnected today to think otherwise.

INDEPENDENCE CAN ONLY WORK IF WE RECOGNIZE OUR INTERDEPENDENCE. If we do this right, both sides will enjoy an enormous peace dividend. By building mutually interdependent social, cultural, and economic institutions, we create incentives for prosperity on all sides, and establish alternatives to conflict. It is in our interest (speaking as an ardent Zionist), that we partner with the Palestinians to create something they will think twice about losing in a fight with us. Can you imagine what an example this could set for the world? It is not as impossible as some would have you believe. For the first time in many years, we have a real opportunity to take significant steps towards a lasting peace. All the pieces of the puzzle are there: a shared monotheistic tradition, a shared land, and shared interests. For historical and cultural reasons, there may always be those on all sides who insist on separation from the other, and perhaps this is ok. Intimate integration is also a kind of violence against identity. But in the places where public spheres overlap and intertwine, new possibilities are emerging. Peacemaking is, amongst many other things, the art of cultivating justice and creating the conditions for mutual prosperity. Justice and prosperity, in the context of this conflict, are non-zero sum games (win/win or lose/lose). The reality is that no one is going anywhere, so both communities must act as responsible agents, and challenge untenable strategies for the long term security of their peoples. Israelis and Palestinians must recognize both their independence and their interdependence.
