The best way I can defend the cartoon is by explaining that M. Night Shyamalan BUTCHERED the portrayal of the TV show. I was a lot like you; had never seen the show and after seeing this movie, I watched the show on Nexflix and found it 1000 times better than the movie. Watch the show if you want...
