It was handled better in the original FMA - this is over-the-top dramatic, one might even say emo, and far too much talking. Compared to this the original is almost stripped-down, just the essentials - and in the end, the essentials are what make this so tragic.
I never made it past this episode because Kamina was too over-the-top awesome and the manly tears were just too much :( Perhaps I'll try again some time...
