I agree that riding defensively is a good idea, but I think you should pull over a bit when the road dictates instead of doggedly sticking to your line.
I've only ever hit three cars in my 20+ years riding on the road, and they were all my own fault (I must admit). At the same time, I have slapped cars when they have got too close and introduced them to my handlebar caps (big chunks of alloy) when I have felt I was in danger (as I feel to take my hand off the bars would be dangerous). So method of avoidance is fool proof (and there are a lot of fools out there).
I suppose it may also make a difference that I ride a mountain bike.....
I always make space for myself when I need it, but keep as close to the curb/side of the road as possible when passing crossing/traffic light islands to make sure even large buses can get through.
Keep up the good work - and I can see some other interesting channels I haven't seen yet from your subscriptions.
