Er... technically, it's an analogue hybrid synth! The DCOs have quite a few waveforms as well as the usual squares and sawtooths, and it has one genuine voltage-controlled filter (two, in fact, since it's bitimbral). The Korg Poly-800 has a similar architecture... and nobody calls that digital.

@Jetwo1f It's a fairly simple sound effect to create on a modular synth. Both oscillators are modulated with synced LFO ramp waveforms; one oscillator rises in pitch every time it's retriggered, while the other descends. Peter Baumann also used it on his early solo albums and one Tangerine Dream'...

Where are the expensive electronics? All I saw were budget mixers, cheap second-hand home keyboards and simple FX pedals. If you this that sort of stuff's expensive, type 'modular synthesizer' into Google and make sure you're sitting down before you look at the costs!

@zeke1958 You should have been around in 1980. All we had to keep our eyes occupied was a bit of vinyl twirling round and round, with a tonearm moving really slowly in towards the middle. To pass the time, we often listened to the music.

I see Virgin's cock-up department worked on this insert, too. It's 'This Day', not 'This This Day'! (I had the original LP on vinyl.)

Did I detect a note of bitter jealousy there, calyx93? Surely the 'intended purpose' of a modular synthesizer (if there was such a thing) is experimentation - something which the non-musician is perhaps better equipped for than the traditional instrumentalist?

@AuronTsubaki85 Er... He already is. He's an accomplished jazz pianist and he's composed the soundtracks to several of his films - such as Million Dollar Baby, which is available on CD. As is the country & western album he recorded in 1959.

@SHSGuitars I can promise you that keys of the 70s do slip out of tune. If you don't believe me, try dropping a Korg Vocoder and retuning the b**tard! And synth VCOs were famously unstable until digital pitch stabilisation (DCOs) came in in the 80s, together with 100% digital synths.

@tiad I saw him with Rainer Bloss at Coventry Cathedral around the time that Dig It, Trancefer and Drive Inn were released, and he was using the digital Crumar GDS quite heavily back then. So I'm not sure there's much of that 'great sound' of Moog on this.
