@Nashblackcat, When we chose the materials, we were under the impression that PVC was safe to use as long as we didn't exceed its pressure rating. A fire extinguisher can is a cool idea, but I would probably go for something that's designed to be refilled.

This is really cool. Although, if you're only using serial communication between the phone and the Arduino, you could replace the physical cables with a Bluetooth modem capable of supporting the Serial Port Profile, and control that guy wirelessly!

This is cool. You could also try using a photoresistor and a 555 timer configured as a monostable multivibrator to control the frequency of the signal. It would be really cool if you could build the hardware to keep the sound in a certain key.
