Posts: 6,897 Having seen all of the so called "legends" and spoken with several players who had played against them the one, that stands out above everybody else is Duncan Edwards. George Best was without a doubt the one with the flair but in terms of what one player brought to the team then it has to be Duncan.
I know there will be several in here who have their favourites and am just expressing what I have witnessed.
One who I think over the years will be another legend will be Phil Jones

To be honest, I've never heard of Gary Speed. I'm sorry that he died though.

R.i.p Gary Speed one of my favorite Newcastle and players from anywhere ever, a really good player and leader in his day as well, when he left Newcastle it was one of the reasons we went in to decline after 2004

His son, Sandy, who grew up with most of his father's eponymous Babes and remains closely connected with the club to this day, has few doubts: "I think dad found something of the Duncan in George, the same brilliance, the same mastery of all the football arts and, in those days at least, the same professionalism. That sounds daft now, but in those days George lived for football, nothing else. Just like Duncan. Dad nearly did give up after Munich, Duncan's death was a terrible shock, and it was only mum who talked him round. But it was Bestie who restored his faith in football in many ways."

Busby had always resisted attempts to draw from him comparisons between Edwards and Best, preferring to place them on an equal level at the top of a hypothetical league table made up of all the great players he discovered, nurtured and allowed to flourish at Old Trafford, and maybe he was right.

Mr Jones, a retired insurance worker, was a pupil at Dudley Technical College and Duncan was a striker forthe team at Wolverhampton Street School.

On a number of occasions while in goal Mr Jones, now aged 72, faced Duncan on the pitch.

"Playing against him was an experience in itself. I was a goalkeeper and in my mind I can still feel the sting of his shot to this day," he said.

"If Duncan had the ball and you caught it, your hands were warmed, especially as in those days the balls were heavy leather.

"Even at 14 Duncan was a colossus, a man among boys.

"The only player I have ever seen who I could compare with Duncan was the great John Charles. Today's players don't come anywhere near the ability this lad possessed."

I have been following United since I saw my first game, versus Everton 1954-55. Ive seen them come and I've seen them go - all the greats, Pele, Best, Law, Charlton, Cantona, De Stefano, Puskas et al. Time can play tricks with the mind and there are many things of which I am now uncertain but, of one thing I have no doubt. Duncan Edwards stands alone as the greatest footballer that I ever saw. We shall not see his like again.

I only saw Duncan play live once, many times but not enough on T.V. He was so good he could have played in any team, in any era and still have been starman. His book "Tackle soccer this way" would be an ideal gift for any young boy wanting to play football. Thanks for great memories. God bless them all

Scotland failing to get to the big stages yet again, we're used to it since 1998 world cup but lets hope we stick with the manager and give our self's the best crack to get to the 2014 world cup
