Despite neglect owing to apathy and a long held belief that Hong Kong was (and in many ways is) 'a borrowed place on borrowed time', we have, nonetheless, inherited an identity and culture that has endured.

Our hard won history, culture and identity, despite imperfections, is both unique and vibrant, and is worth protecting from China that seeks to reintegrate us (both politically and culturally) into the mainland by destroying our identity.

We, as Hong Kongers, must guard against our own apathy and feelings of hopelessness and know that it is us, above all else, who will drive our future.

To do this we must now decide, are we to define ourselves as colonial subjects of China? Insincerely kowtowing to our mainland masters for economic and political scraps, hoping that our sycophantic behaviour will earn us a reprieve in 2047? Or will we define ourselves as a worthy people who will define our own future based on the values we, as Hong Kongers, hold dear?

Clearly the avenues of political representation will continue to be closed as they have been since July 1st 1997, some optimistically hope that the Chief Executive election in 2017 will offer some hope, but with candidates selected by Beijing, it does not need an explanation to say that it will not.

Sadly, only through education, peaceful activism and participation of people from all walks of life, can Hong Kong hope to achieve any semblance of reform.

Remember, nothing is deserved unless it is earned. If we do nothing that is precisely what we will get. In 2003 we demanded change, and we got it. And we can do it again. It wins us no respect from Beijing and is beneath any dignified and self-respecting people to beg, kowtow or 'give face' when asking for what is rightfully ours; dominion over our own destiny.

It is only through a loud voice with one cry that we are Hong Kong and we WILL have better than the scraps we have been given, we will not be absorbed into Beijing's vision of homogeneous latter day empire and it is us who will decide our future, not Beijing.
