I teach children with autism. My specialization is in early learners. Teaching language to children with little or no functional communication is my particular interest. It is every childs right to be educated in a way that makes sense to them with respect for who they are. Learning takes place in the 'natural environment', home, parks, the beach, libraries etc. Communication is a two way street. So, not only do I teach children skills to navigate their way through 'our world', I spend time in theirs (and I enjoy it). When children realize they're in the company of someone who's on the same wavelength as they are, what happens is that the child WANTS to communicate with others. They seek you out to play and show you things, eye contact is increased not because they are given a reward but because they want to share their enjoyment with you.
