Demonstrating a musical maturity of artists twice their age, The Psybrary's driving basslines, blending of genres, and wafting melodies have made this teenage band a force unparallelled to the ears. The group's modest, witty temperament stemmed as a result of being founded in St. Joseph, Michigan, a humble, religious town on the shore of Lake Michigan. There, violinist/guitarist, Fangbo "Ignatious" Yuan recruited his friend, Christopher Kang, to drum for the former's band. Feeling unsatisfied by the simplicity and lack of depth that their early material provided, Kang sought the help of his brother's friend, Cullen Huffines, to play bass. However, the pursuit for a dynamic vocalist to front the group proved fruitless, resulting in the fledgling band to nearly disband. Finally, after months of argument, Chris Kang decided to take up double duty as both a percussionist and singer, adding yet another layer to The Psybrary's sound with his expressive, powerful voice.

The Psybrary was never a band to rely on virtuosity; Ignatious (who remains the band's main songwriter), being a classically-trained violinist, realized the importance of texture and emotion instead of pure skill. That's not to say The Psybrary didn't have skill; their instrumental, "Space Sick", remains a demanding piece to conquer.

It is hard to place The Psybrary within just one musical genre. They are alt-rock, but only in the loosest sense. Kang brings a sense of heavy metal to the group, Ignatious brought the melodies of classical music along with him, and Huffines's nonchalant omnipresence brings back images of groups of a past generation. Whatever the genre, no two Psybrary songs sound quite the same, whether it be the anthemic "Don't Fall Away", the futuristic space rock of "The Future" and "Radio Static", the lilting "I Suck at Writing Love Songs, or the acoustic, poppy "Look at Us". Most Psybary songs are driven by the bass, with the guitar or violin adding both support and another melodic layer. The percussion seems as if it's in a world of its own, frequently syncopated and dominated by cymbals.

The Psybrary have many years ahead of them, and they will certainly be a band to look out for in the future.
