My name is Joe Steiger. Doing this video is really difficult for me. I don't like asking people for help. Especially for something so trivial.
First and foremost, I am a HUGE fan of the show, The Big Bang Theory. My dream is to fly across the country to California, meet the cast and tour the set of The Big Bang Theory. Why do I want this to happen? Let me share with you my story. The story is long and involved. I'll try and be as brief as possible.
As an infant, I was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy. There are different types of M.D. but doctors haven't been able to identify which type I have. I like to joke that it's Joe Steiger Muscular Dystrophy. When I was 10 years old, I had a surgery to correct Scoliosis. After the surgery, we noticed I didn't have the ability to speak above a low whisper. The doctors couldn't give me any reason as to why I could no longer speak as I once had.
I had about three surgeries to try and repair my vocal chords. I lost count. Doctor's attempted a procedure called vocal cord medialization, where they put in implants, moving vocal cords closer together, in hopes of creating a voice. Unfortunately, none of these attempts were successful. During the last surgery, they decided to remove all of the implants because they thought they were not helping. After the implants were removed, I noticed every time I would eat, I would cough profusely. I would have to lie down with my bipap machine to clear my lungs. The constant need for my bipap when eating left me rather confined to my house for the next nine years or so. I could only venture out of the house for short periods of time and couldn't go out anywhere that would involve me eating.
Fast-forwarding to November 2013, after a choking scare, I decided it was time to do something about my coughing. I was always fearful of going back under the knife but I figured now was the time to do something. I decided to try putting my vocal cord implants back in. After the surgery, I can now eat without coughing. This means that I can finally go out to eat and hopefully even travel!
Through all of my physical limitations, I try to keep a positive outlook. I know there are people out there who are less fortunate than I am. My family, friends, and faith are a big source of strength. I am truly grateful for all the support I have.
Now that my surgery was a huge success, I'm ready for an adventure! As I stated before, I'm a HUGE fan of The Big Bang Theory. Well, maybe huge is an understatement. I watch the episodes over and over. I'm at the point where I don't even have to have the TV on. I can just play entire episodes in my head. I collect Sheldon Cooper's shirts and memorabilia, including my favorite item...Sheldon's Batman cookie jar, which is displayed proudly on my desk. I am really good with computers and technology. I enjoy Photoshopping myself into scenes of the show. All in good fun. People think I've gone a little insane about the show, but I don't mind if people think I'm crazy. I just continue to enjoy the show. It's a big part of my life. It would be a big thrill if I am able to cross off the one item on my bucket list, which is to meet the cast and tour the set of The Big Bang Theory.
