About this user
After being raised in a Christian home with years of music lessons from their father, 3 brothers from Maryland started a rock band in 2006. Touring simply under their last name, Willet (www.willetonline.com), the band had big dreams of radio singles, record deals, and national tours. On the other side of the world, over 12,000 people were dying from HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis, as well as over 26,000 people dying from hunger and malnutrition.
EVERYDAY.
In 2007, Jeremy, Justin, and Jordan Willet went to visit this side of the world. 10 days in Ethiopia, Africa would prove to be life changing. All of a sudden, radio singles and record deals took a back seat to finding a way to help thousands of children living in poverty. The next 5 years would consist of heavy U.S. and international touring to speak on behalf of children that couldn't speak for themselves. During that time, the band recorded and released 5 studio albums, sold over 20,000 records, won independent music awards, and landed several independent #1 radio singles. Although many considered the band, "successful", these achievements took second place to the work being done to see thousands of children sponsored through events, and many international trips into the communities that were being impacted. In addition, Jeremy and his wife, Kathleen, lived in Haiti for a year (2009-2010) where Kathleen served as a community development facilitator. Thankfully, she was safe through the January 2010 7.0 earthquake.
During the years of full-time touring, the band developed a program called, The Hunger Strike Challenge to encourage students to go without food for 24-hours in an effort to raise money and awareness about extreme poverty. At the end of 2010, the band realized that The Hunger Strike Challenge was an endeavor larger then just a program, and therefore decided to invest the profit made from CD sales, tour dates, and merchandise sales into a new non-profit called The Hunger Strike. The Hunger Strike became an official partner of Food for the Hungry, staying true to the vision to respond to God's call "until physical and spiritual hungers are ended worldwide". Willet as a band continues to tour the world, but now has office space located in Pleasant Valley, MD for Hunger Strike staff.
