The Felt DollsWho are the felt dolls?
The Felt Dolls are Kirsty Hawkshaw and Rebecca Rainsford. Kirsty a renowned singer and songwriter with a career spanning 20 years in the music industry, she is known for her hit record in the early 90's with Opus 111 'It's a Fine Day', and Just Be with Tiesto in 2001. Her voice enchants wherever it is heard. Rebecca an actress and musician who toured internationally in theatre shows for over 15 years specialising in children's theatre and comedy. But this past history of working in the arts is not what brought these two Artists together. The Felt Dolls are both Mothers and met through their daughters Edie and Christabel who became best friends at Pre School and threw these two women together.
Rebecca quotes: "We really connected on many levels. We were trying to spend time with our children nurturing and guiding them and yet also trying to keep the inner creative fire burning. For both of us it had been a shock going from independent creative professional to breastfeeding mother tied to the endless wants and needs of a small Children. We discovered we had learnt to survive this transition by keeping creative projects going no matter how big or small, keeping the creative part of ourselves alive which then enabled us to enjoy our time and share some of these creative projects with our children."
Kirsty says: "It took time to realise that our creative paths could flow together, we were happy to chat about ideas but it took about a year or so before we actually got down to it. They performed a Radio appearance at the infamous Foundry in Shoreditch hosted by Tracey Moberley. We worked beautifully together and our passion for our children lead to our first collaboration entitled; "listen to the hush" an album of songs for children based on nature and stories that can be interpreted on many levels, specifically aimed at the Autumn to Winter season. This is not a baby album with electronic keyboards bleating away in the background, but a beautiful blend of harp, metallophone and voices consisting of 6 tracks and 6 instrumentals. Kirsty says "one day my Daughter came home singing a Britney spears song, I realised I had to do something to guard her childhood as best I can, and make something magical for her as an alternative to singing songs about being 'toxic'. Children are so impressionable and as a Mother I feel such an urgent need to protect her as best I can, though it's not all within my control. All I can do is give her an option." It is music to be enjoyed by adults and children alike, music to be enjoyed together and talked about. We want to inspire other mothers to find their inner creativity and enjoy spending time with their child doing simple things like making magical window stars, Felting, creating, or blowing the seeds off dandelions watching out for rainbows, planning picnics in the park and enjoying each season.
We are both now in our 40's and each expecting our 3rd child so the creative journey continues.............
"listen to the hush" by the felt dolls to be released winter 2010
