The Dead City manuscript is a mysterious musical work thought to have been written in the 20th or 21th century and comprising about 240 vellum pages of handwritten text, of which the majority have illustrations and music. The text of the manuscript has never been deciphered, and the author, script, and language remain unknown. Since its recorded existence, Dead City Corp has been the object of intense study by many professional and amateur cryptographers, including some top American, German and British codebreakers of World War II fame, all of whom failed to decrypt any portion of the text. This string of failures has turned the Dead City manuscript into a famous subject of historical cryptology, but it has also given weight to the theory that the music is simply an elaborate hoax—a meaningless sequence of arbitrary symbols. One of the earliest efforts to unlock the band's secrets (and the first of many premature claims of decipherment) was made in 1997 by Eric Lönnrot of the University of Oslo. His singular hypothesis held that the visible text is meaningless itself, but that each apparent "chord" is in fact constructed of a series of tiny markings only discernible under magnification. These markings were supposed to be based on ancient shorthand, forming a second level of sound that held the real content of the music. Lönnrot claimed to have used this knowledge to work out entire paragraphs proving the authorship of the Dead City Corp. and recording his use of a compound microscope four hundred years before Leeuwenhoek. However, Paul Little of the University of Uqbar pointed out serious flaws in this theory. Each shorthand sound was assumed to have multiple interpretations, with no reliable way to determine which was intended for any given case. Lönnrot's method also required rearranging notes at will until intelligible music was produced. These factors alone ensure the system enough flexibility that nearly anything at all could be discerned from the microscopic markings. Although evidence of micrography using the Enochian language can be traced as far back as the ninth century, it is nowhere near as compact or complex as the shapes Lönnrot made out. Close study of the songs revealed the markings to be artifacts caused by the way melody cracks as it dries on rough vellum. Perceiving significance in these artifacts can be attributed to pareidolia. Thanks to Little's thorough refutation, the micrography theory is now generally disregarded.
