Hailing from Salford, The Black Knights unleash their primal brand of voodoo trash/blues.The band's love/hate relationship creates a volatile sound, with darkly poetic lyrics set to raw, stripped back guitar and drums; Think Queens of The Stone Age battling The White Stripes in a crypt...
They are currently writing and recording their debut album, in follow up to their well-received Parade of Piranhas' EP.
We generally dont get along on a personal level; most days I cant stand to be in the same building as that fucker offers Thomas Richard Pickford III (Drums), but when we come together as The Black Knights, the whole thing just gels. It turns me on.
The Dark Reverend Gary L Hope (Vox/Guitar) is an enigmatic figure; the black eyed preacher holding both a degree in English Literature and a criminal conviction for assault.
The conviction thing happened a long time ago and its spent now. Ive always had the easy going exterior but its tempered with something beneath, a sense of outrage.
Their live shows are an unmissable experience and their voodoo trash/blues style never fails to excite.
This review from Manchester Music (at In The City) sums up perfectly:
the purple-suited, sparkly eyelinered, Satanic goateed Gary L Hope is still one of the scariest frontmen youll encounter. His vocals are best described as, well, imagine if Prince and Jack White had a child (no, bear with me) only he was born in Salford and fucking pissed off about it. This is backed by dirty great motherfucker riffs, often thrashed out on the bass strings, and drumming that sounds like a fight. Theyre always good live but theyre absolutely on fire tonight, Gary pushing his guitar deep into the amp while Tom Pickford batters seven shades of hell out of his minimal kit. The interaction between the two is compelling; with a tight two-man set-up such as this they fix on each other constantly, with looks that fall somewhere between encouraging and threatening.
Highlights include performing at the Friends of Manchester Festival 2009 & 2010, performing a show for BBC Manchester Introducing, and holding an exclusive instore at Zavvi. TBK also played three storming shows over In The City 2009 (Blowout, ITC Official: The Country Club and SJM Concerts showcase). They have also shared stages with Band of Skulls, The Hot Melts, To The Bones, & Lissy Trullie. .
They have received airplay on stations including XFM & BBC6 Music, and interviews and sessions for Salford City Radio & BBC Manchester Introducing.
Gary sums up: 'People leave our shows not knowing whether to fuck or fight; and thats the response we expect'.
All hail The Black Knights.
