In 2007, newly-coupled Kali Giaritta and Matt Harmon formed The Ascetic Junkies as a quiet folk band with their roommates in Brighton, Massachusetts, a mile or two from the colleges they'd just graduated from. After working out a collection of songs largely written about each other, K & M decided to move to a city with more tolerance for folk and less snow. But after moving cross-country to Portland, recording their 2008 debut "One Shoe Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (Matt recorded, mixed, mastered, produced, and played most of the instruments since they were in band-limbo) and forming a full band in their new home, they found themselves more interested in adjectives like 'loud', 'boisterous', and 'energetic'. The AJ's have since been entertaining quickly growing audiences in the Pac NW and all over the west coast with their rambunctious, crowd-participatory live shows, and have gained a national following through YouTube user-made videos, podcasts, and college radio. They are currently recording a second album to be released in the second half of 2010.
