Theirs light at the end of the tunnel.
What made Abraham Jewish? What made Sarah Jewish? Abraham's father and mother were not Jewish. Sarah's father or mother were not Jewish. Okay, then why was Isaac Jewish? Was it because his father was Jewish, or because his mother was Jewish? How can you tell? What the difference? For that matter, why wasn't Ishmael Jewish? His father was Abraham. Yet only Isaac became the ancestor of the Jews. Was it because Isaac's mother (Sarah) was Jewish, and Ishmael's mother (Hagar) was not? No, that is not the reason. It was because Isaac chose to serve Hashem, and Ishmael did not. Let's look at the next generation. Why was Jacob Jewish, when Esau was not? They both had the same mother, and the same father! The reason is because Jacob served Hashem, and Esau did not, and thus Hashem chose Jacob, but did not choose Esau. All of Jacob's children served Hashem, and therefore Hashem chose all of them.
So we see that the Tanakh's stories of our ancestors do not show that Jewishness was passed along by the by the mother. There is no evidence of it at all. Lets look at the Matriarchs as well. Sarah, exactly like Abraham, obeyed Gods laws. So did Rebecca, yet her parents were not Jewish. When the Torah speaks of the Law against marrying a non-Jew (Deuteronomy 7:3), here is what the Torah says:
Do not intermarry with them; do not give your daughter to his son, and do not take his daughter for your son.
For he will cause your son to turn away from Me, and they will worship the gods of others....
We find that when Jehovah told Abraham to leave his birthplace Haran, the Torah tells us: "Abram took Sarai his wife, and his nephew Lot, all their belongings, and all the souls they had made in Haran; they left to go to the land Canaan, and they arrived at Canaan" (Genesis 12:5). Who where the souls they made? Were they in the soul manufacturing business? They had no children yet, so it can't mean that. Three chapters later, in Genesis 15:3, Abraham says to Hashem, "You have given me no children yet...."
Abraham made sure the religion was maintained, and that his children and all the members of his household, the "souls they had made in Haran," would keep the Commandments that G-d had given him. There for we "Sons of Isreal" must obey all of the Lords mitzvah and teach rightousness unto the nations.
"The LORD hath redeemed Jacob, and glorified himself in Israel -Isaiah" 44:23.
"And I will place salvation in Zion for Israel my glory." - Isaiah 46:13.
" saith the LORD; My spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed's seed, saith the LORD from henceforth and for ever." Isaiah 59.21
"And the Redeemer shall come to Zion and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the LORD." Isaiah 59:20
