About Prayers for Our Mothers

Creating reverence and respect for our mothers, and spreading the word about the health of mothers all over the world!

Welcome to the Prayers for Our Mothers project!

Make a video of yourself (1) offering a prayer for/tribute to your mother, and (2) explaining why you think maternal health is a critical global issue. Then (3) upload it to YouTube and send a YouTube message to the FAM Campaign, including your email address and the YouTube video URL. We'll review it and then add it to our Favorites and our website for everyone to see! Then (4) share it with your friends over Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, and invite them to make their own video!

When you think of your mom, what comes to mind? Everyone's relationship with their mother is different. But we all share a profound love and connection with our mothers. When we contemplate what our mothers have meant to us over the course of our lives, the tragic condition of hundreds of thousands of mothers throughout the world today should jump out at us and startle us into action.

1000 women die every day from causes related to childbirth and pregnancy. This means that every 90 seconds a woman dies from complications during or shortly after pregnancy. In 2000, the United Nations identified maternal health as a critical global issue. As one of the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the countries of the world made a promise to reduce maternal mortality by 75% between 1990 and 2015. And yet of all the MDGs, the improvement of maternal health has experienced the least progress.

The Prayers for Our Mothers project seeks to honour the mothers of the world and to spread the message about the importance of maternal health as a global health priority. We hope to engage a vast number people in education and discussion around MDG5, and to make an important contribution to the goal itself. By creating reverence and respect for mothers and motherhood, we can combat the underlying assumptions and prejudices that allow the injustices of maternal mortality to persist in the world.
