It makes me wonder if Charles's brothers (since he was one of nine I think) had any sons so the Ingalls family ...

in real life Laura would go to San Fransisco to visit Rose. The letters that she sent home to Almanzo have been published. I have never read it but I hear it is very good. I am sorry in the tv series that he had such a horrible time visiting San Fransisco. I wonder was the Golden Gate built yet?
