I love it.. why can't we have different interpretations ? The fairy stories are full of scarey moments, and the monkeys in 'The Wizard of Oz' had me bawling as a child. If they're dreaming and they've been so hungry then it would be normal to dream about food!

Classical singing should reflect a singers unique timbre like any other singing. Hampson sounds wonderful in this, and does sing it like a prayer unlike Keenlyside. Some baritones sing it more lightly, but that's a matter of choice. Also some baritones have more of a bass quality, some have a ...

@Eyllek. One's response is usually subjective, and everyone has different taste, but I've just watched the vid you suggested, and I'm afraid I have to disagree. There is no real sexual chemistry between Hearn and Cook. Even just standing still Audra conveys her feelings. Gunns's voice is eff...

Michael has a great voice, but to really see this song performed watch Marin Mazzie at the Sondheim 80th birthday celebrations. She is so still but the emotion is wrenching. In fact the sequence of the six ladies in red doing solos is a master class in how to perform a song. Watch it people !!...

A tour de force!!!!!!!! Not an obvious choice for a stand alone number, she makes it into a show stopper. I love her operatic voice, and they way she uses it so naturally. Any opera singer trying to sing Sondheim should take lessons from her.......

I saw her live at the Picadilly Theatre in London... and she was amazing.. I remember her shimmying across the stage and soaring across the footlights..it was a long time ago, late seventies I think, but she was amazing.
She gives it her own spin, and it's terriffic, but I still prefer Elaine Stritch on the Sondheim 80th Birthday concert. I've seen it sung by so many different people including Dolores Gray and Eartha Kitt, and it's amazing how what is essentially a repetitive, almost patter, song can be done so ...
