I think one should allways jump. Selecting not to jump will only postpone the jump, push it onto a higher cliff and make it even more dangerous.
When the landing is hard, one should use the pain to think why he/she wanted to jump and why did the landing hurt. So that next time he/she will now better.
Every living thing wants to jump as often as possible. It is normal. Hard landings are normal too.
Even a decision of not jumping is a kind of a jump (a very safe and thus dissatisfying one) (the "right" and thus the unnatural one (What is right is never considered a jump :)).
