Featuring members of bands that have performed in the Baton Rouge and South Louisiana area over the last decade and a half, The Mysterious Stranger has sneaked on to the indie scene in Baton Rouge. Playing packed houses for music lovers across this city, The Mysterious Stranger may be the best kept secret in Baton Rouge. The set is diverse; there are heartfelt folk tunes and guitar driven rock and roll songs, fulfilling desires of listeners of all types.
The beat is complex, winning compliments for the drummer, John Peralta, with his sometimes tribal, sometimes progressive styling. Popping over the top of things is a satisfying and patient country blues guitar played by Luke Thomas. There are two guitarists in The Mysterious Stranger making it a treat for fans of strings. The second guitar player, Jason Ourso, favors an acid rock lead style that definitely punches things up to a The Mars Volta level of intensity at times. The trading off of riffs makes for an interesting dialogue between the two players and makes for entertaining performance. The vocal stylings of Jason Ourso, also the lead singer, is unique. He has been compared to David Byrne, Tom Petty, and Isaac Brock both in application and in the beautifully written storytelling aspect of his lyrics. Pulling everything together putting a nice polish and ambiance around the edges is Aaron Bordelon on bass guitar and Mike Roy on keys and backing vocals.
The result is a homegrown musical performance experience that has everyone buzzing. Flipping back the pages nearly 14 years ago, a band by the name of NO SANE WAYS hit the streets of suburban Walker, Louisiana with a sound so authentic, that the songs became an anthem for teenagers and were drilled into the minds of kids that were lucky enough to be a part of it. The band consisted of: Jason Ourso (lead singer), John Peralta (drums), Aaron Bordelon (bass), Luke Thomas (lead guitar), Ryan Hotard (Guitar), and Alex Hubbell (keyboards).
After a nice run with No Sane Ways, Jason became lead vocalist for an already established metal band by the name of QUARANTINE. After a few years, Jason started his own metal project, KNEVER, with most of the same Quarantine crew. After three albums, a DVD, a large number of shows across Louisiana and surrounding areas, and a huge following in their home town, the band split up. Leaving Jason, and Aaron on a quest to find their own light in the Baton Rouge music scene.
On May 11th, 2003 the first MURDER ON SUNDAY show took place. Jason and Aaron, with only two acoustic guitars and their voices knew that they were on to something bigger, and began their hunt for a full band. Going back to where it started, Jason and Aaron recruited John Peralta on drums, Jeremy Pourcey (of KNEVER) on Bass Guitar, and Mike Roy (Jason's neighbor) on keys and synth. After a few shows, Jeremy left the band and was replaced with Alex Hubbell, ex-keyboardist for No Sane Ways.
Everything appeared to be looking up for Murder on Sunday. But, slowly the band began going under. A lack of shows, differences in musical taste, the incredibly slow release of a debut album proved murderous on morale of the band. Alex was no longer playing bass, and Mike Roy had left the band. Shortly after that, Aaron also left the band. Murder on Sunday was dead.
In November of 2008, With only Jason and John left, they began to build what would ultimately become, THE MYSTERIOUS STRANGER. Again, Jason went back to his roots, and brought in Luke, Ex-guitarist for No Sane Ways, to play lead guitar, and a new bass player. The band was now content, and began to find their own sound. A sound that everyone in the band was proud of. Still, they felt something was missing. But, after a few phone calls, Mike Roy was playing keys again, and Aaron had replaced the bass player. It seemed as if this were a No Sane Ways reunion, with one exception.
The Mysterious Stranger is ready to take over the Baton Rouge indie scene one ear at a time. With their mixture of folk, high energy rock and roll, and experimental sounds; it leaves the listeners intrigued by the mystery and talking to strangers.
