@lagunagreg Yes, to think that she once sang Konstanze! I am reminded of an interview that Jessye Norman gave where she touched on Purcell and Händel. Humorous as always, she said something along the lines of "Well, darling, my instrument can only move SO fast."
I would be thrilled if Fleming's...

Not nearly as funny (or cute) as Nathan Lane in the role. From my recollection, the play has now been opened up. I recollect there being only two people and only a single set, but it's been decades.

I enjoyed this performance very much. Your voice has a very interesting timbre ... A very difficult Lied. My main suggestion would be that your accompanist and you need more rubato. There is almost no room for expressiveness here. I hope you continue.

@Wally773MTG The irony of the text is that the text contrasts the humble circumstances of Christ's birth and his exalted being as the Son of God. The text refers to how little God regards the earthly splendor ... but complete with trumpet fanfare and florid singing!

Stupendous. Can you post the entire concert? I did find it on another web site in its entirety, but not the lovely HD quality you offer here. I am not the biggest Dessay fan, or the biggest Haïm fan, but I found this incredibly touching and the pacing immaculately judged.

Perfect voice for this repertory. Your French is so much better than your German ... which is remarkable because French is so much harder to pronounce. Wonderfully expressive approach to these subtle songs.

If his timbre weren't so close to Fischer-Diekau's, it would be easier to overlook the fact that he's barking his way through this aria as DFD did so many times. Also, few performances manage to capture the irony of the words and their musical setting.

The 29 was deserved. It's a tango, yes, but with a German twist (listen to the soundtrack) ... and there's a strong German influence in Argentina. The seeming rigidity and sternness of the dance plays off that connection. Her footwork was precise. There was passion, but it was very contained. The...

@mchlcooper Agreed, absolutely. This is one of those pieces of music that almost always sounds better in "the mind's ear" than heard performed. But Dame Emma is the exception. @amphocell Do calm down. @lukaniksa is referring to the theme of the opera Les Indes Galantes, which had to do with exotic locales, mores, and religious practices. Looks like Philistinism runs rampant here.
