@Schizopantheist I agree. I had much the same experience as you. Although I didn't fully understand the music at first, its sheer beauty made me want to get to know it better. Now it's one of my favourite pieces of quartet music.

@ChicagoTheory You may be right, but that's all one can say. Your assertion that Bruckner's studies with the cellist Kitzler would "certainly" have familiarised him with Beethoven's late quartets is simply not justified, with respect.

This is interesting but far inferior to the original version. It proves that the quintet is a genuine chamber work, and not just another symphony somehow arranged for string orchestra.

The cello is far too declamatory at the beginning. A slightly faster, shallower vibrato and a less aggressive dynamic would have made all the difference. This is neither a concerto cadenza nor the death of Don Quixote. Such a pity, because the performance is otherwise very good.

As one cellist to another - Respect, dude! A powerful, thoroughly musical performance of a challenging piece. It may be the sound quality or the acoustic, but the piano seems a bit overpowering at times. Perhaps it might have been better with the lid down?
This is a great sonata by a much underrated composer who seems to have gone out of fashion. He was a pianist, but wrote extremely well for strings, as this sonata and his three fine quartets testify. Thanks for posting this enjoyable performance.
