Hi,i'm tarnicles. I love reading, traveling, painting and appreciating music. The world is such an astonishing place. Its smells, sights and sounds keep a man busy his entire life.I have rejected the notion of the existence of a "God". It is a delusion that tenaciously grips the minds of many a man all over the world. The notion of religion is frivolous and puerile. It belittles this beautiful world and us-the creatures that inhabit this blue pearl suspended in an unfathomable sea of darkness. Music, art and books are my Holy Trinity.
For an entire year I searched high and low for a 'God' or some supernatural artificer for this world. On a cool November night, as a means to relieve utter boredom, I chanced upon a short clip from 'The Atheism Tapes'. As I viewed it, I had a feeling that there was no turning back. The tenuous veneer of religious belief had begun to chip off in a matter of minutes of viewing the clip. The germ of an idea had been sown in my mind. It is that infectious, reason is. Just seizes your attention despite years of ingrained notions and indoctrination. My experience could best be summed up in the following words from a Farsi composition by Amir Khusro Dehlavi:
" As my eyes alighted on you, a thousand idols faded away"
At the risk of sounding mystical, I believe that in a poetic manner, a thousand idols were indeed smashed to pieces. These were false idols that could never have borne up to scrutiny or reason!
I love cooking . I love preparing Biryani from scratch, its such a fulfilling endeavor! The end-product is a marvelous piece of culinary art. I have a 65 year-old 'degh' or cauldron in my kitchen which belonged to someone in my family long ago. This is the utensil I use to prepare the delicacy. Really, there are very few things I know that are as agreeable as piping-hot Biryani on a beautiful spring day.
I prefer vegetarian food although I do partake of non-vegetarian stuff( like murgh biryani) every once in a while. I love South-Indian food too since I love the variety of savory, vegetarian food that is on offer!
I have a vegetable garden in my backyard where I try my hand at gardening. Recently, I planted 5 neat rows of Chilly-peppers, a cluster of ferns( in the shadiest corner of the garden), lots of basil and some eggplants and cucumbers. On a recent vacation outside New Delhi, I came across an 'Epiphyllum Oxypetalum' plant, also known as Orchid Cactus in English and 'Nishagandhi' or 'Gul-e-Bakawali' in Hindi. It is propagated by its leaves. The flower it bears is an exotic bloom that gives off a heady scent and is truly a joy to behold. I took great care to preserve a single, potted leaf I took from the plant and somehow managed to transport it back to Delhi. I hope the plant does well here! I also got a couple of Rauwolfia plants and a handful of seeds from a Himalayan Cypress tree. I shall try my best to get the seeds to germinate( although doing so in Delhi would be an overly ambitious project). This wealth of flora was all acquired on a recent trip to the Himalayan hills north of New Delhi, which resemble a verdant playground of nature and beauty even at the very height of the Indian summer. I chanced upon an obscure Nursery tucked well inside a forest, that specialized in Exotic plants and herbs. The most delightful corner of the nursery had an entire field of turmeric flowers- something I had never seen before in my life. Pink and yellow, the flowers were shaped like inverted Pineapples. I later discovered that great care is required in order to get the Turmeric plant to burst forth into such a riot of colors.
P.S. Fools who like to indulge in India-Pakistan jousting matches, please DO NOT BOTHER TO LEAVE A COMMENT. I am sick and tired of semi-literate, jingoistic cretins and trolls. Indians and Pakistanis, do not get your panties in a twist. At the end of the day, we are all Africans.
