I started my singing career as a baritone in 1950 on Broadway in Top Banana, Most Happy Fella, South Pacific. Went to Italy sang Sharpless in Butterfly and di Luna in Trovatore in Milan in 1954---Debuted as Scarpia in Basel with Montserrat Caballe in her first Tosca---Two years in Berlin alternating with Fischer-Dieskau in Masked Ball and Don Carlo--3 years at the Vienna Staatsoper under von Karajan before changing to Helden tenor. Played Christ in 1958 Ben Hur ; debuted at La Scala as Eric and Bayreuth as Siegmund in 1966 with the Tristan film in 1968. Spoletto, Italy Tristan also came in '68. Sang a total of 8 Tristan productions in two years. The highlight of '69 was singing 4 performances of Otello with Tebaldi in Boston with Ramon Vinay as Iago, where Placido Domingo appeared at my dressing room. Sang last Tristan at Liceo-Barcelona in 1970 and then retired at 43 with a full 3 yr calendar. Came out of retirement in 1975 to sing Siegmund and Siegfried in Seattle Opera's first complete Ring.
