Good Breeding in Evelina
In Mr. Addison's work, Interesting anecdotes, memoirs, allegories, essays, and poetical fragments, tending to amuse the fancy, and inculcate morality (1797), he stated that "those only who are blest with good sense can or dare appear truly well-bred." In Evelina, we can define Burney's interpretation of good breeding by paying attention to the tendencies of Mrs. Mirvan. Throughout the book, Mrs. Mirvan is displayed as the "chill", polite wife of Captain Mirvan. The majority of the time that Evelina mentions Mrs. Mirvan in her letters, she addresses the kindness and good breeding to which Mrs. Mirvan always greets any and every situation and encounter with. As it is impossible for the mortal's mind to put a definite, honest, and, above all, correct meaning to any term, seeing as how subjectiveness is an insufferable little pest, for the sake of Evelina, Mrs. Mirvan will be the definition of good breeding, and good breeding the definition of her. In the instance in which Evelina denied a dance from her first enquirer and accepted the request from her second, Lord Orville, she immediately ran to Mrs. Mirvan for shelter. As readers, it seems as though Burney intended for us to have the impression that the all-knowing Evelina has spotless judgment when it comes to the character of those of whom which she surrounds herself. When Evelina ran to Mrs. Mirvan to tell her of her recent "disasters", Mrs. Mirvan "good-naturedly blamed herself for not having better instructed me [Evelina]" on the "rules of assemblies". Assuming that Evelina's rule is law, can it be said that she assumes Mrs. Mirvan to be faultless? It appears that because Evelina addressed this action as good-natured, she is setting Mrs. Mirvan atop a pedestal; a mediocre-natured individual would never realize his or her faults! Would not any other person just think," Shit, my bad."? Was it really Mrs. Mirvan's fault for not having informed Evelina (a stranger to a city in which social manners are of great importance), in which she was merely "owning up" to her mistake, and in which it is not good-nature but honesty? If Evelina had not already made a fanciful judgement on Mrs. Mirvan's character, would she have instead left out "good-naturedly", implying it not selflessness but plain, old truth, in which too much attention need not be paid? Therefore, the question to be asked is whether or not it is Mrs. Mirvan's being a perfect and faultless human being or her honesty that makes her a well-bred individual. Now, if good breeding is, indeed, Evelina's clean and perfect perception of Mrs. Mirvan, would not taking a solid, unmovable stance on what is morally right be an aspect of utmost importance to good-nature? When Madame Duval was mugged by Mrs. Mirvan's terrible-excuse-for-a-human-being husband, she told Mrs. Mirvan of her plans to go to the law, and Mrs. Mirvan instantly dissuaded her. Is it, then, well-bred to protect one's violent husband, in secret, when Madame Duval, the poor victim, is suffering right in front of her face? In lieu of prior passages in the book, Mrs. Mirvan is almost displayed as a blank slate; the shadow of a monster. The only quality ever mentioned by Cecilia pertaining to Mrs. Mirvan is that of good-nature. Mrs. Mirvan is an incredibly nice person, yes, with nature having made her slow to anger and devoid of confrontation, but are her mouse-like tendencies of avoiding arguments really an aspect of good breeding, simply because all well-bred individuals are nice to the point of weakness? Mr. Addison expressed that good breeding is displayed by having a good sense. Would not a good sense have told Mrs. Mirvan," My husband was in the wrong."? Good breeding would have equipped her with the tools and morality to stand up to her husband when he has made such an error as this.
