We, Citizens of Cameroon living in the United States are assembled before the Cameroon
Embassy in Washington DC today out of undying love and a deep concern for our country.
Cameroonians have suffered for far too long at the hands of the regime of President Paul Biya, and are
expressing decades of repressed and suppressed frustrations, anger and disappointments.
Our country, rich in natural resources, intelligent and creative people, and a highly educated
workforce long envied by others has become one of the most corrupt and least productive nations in
the world. We want an end to the systemic corruption and embezzlement, and public mismanagement
that has crippled our country's economy and stunted its growth. We also want an end to human rights
violations, undemocratic practices and other actions that threaten the peace in Cameroon.
Accordingly, we want the Government of President Paul Biya to enforce the laws of the
country against corrupt state officials and embezzlers. We also want the Government of President
Biya to promote democratic reforms, respect human rights, and the right of the People of Cameroon to
peacefully express their positions on the actions of their government. We want all those responsible
for the killings of innocent Cameroonians to be brought to justice. We call on the Government of
Cameroon to heed to the voices of the people so as to prevent Cameroonians living in the bread basket
of Central Africa from becoming a nation on the brink of starvation by ensuring economic policies
geared at lowering the costs of primary goods and cost of living in Cameroon.
We want the Government of Cameroon to end hostilities against our fellow brothers and
sisters who are exercising their constitutional rights of freedom of speech and expression, and freedom
of assembly. We are therefore very concerned at the arbitrary arrests and rushed trials of our fellow
brothers and sisters currently being summarily sentenced to capricious prison terms in Cameroon. We
are calling on the Government of Cameroon to immediately release all Cameroonians arrested during
the demonstrations, and where charges are brought, they should be done transparently with all the
rights to a fair trial respected and observed.
We want President Paul Biya to respect the Constitution of 1996 which bars him from running
for office again. Any and all attempts to change Article 6(2) of the Constitution in any way, shape, or
form that grants President Paul Biya the ability to run for re-election at the end of him final term in
2011 will potentially lead Cameroon into carnage as evidenced by the recent uprising in Cameroon.
Cameroonians deserve a transparent government of the people, for the people, and by the people.
President Biya has ruled Cameroon for 25 years (since 1982) and prior to that was Prime Minister for
7 years (1975-1982). As such, we want President Paul Biya to make it clear before all Cameroonians
and the international community that he will abide by Article 6(2) of the Constitution and leave office
at the end of his current and final term which ends in 2011.
