HELEN OF TROY, considered the most beautiful woman in the world, leaves husband for another. She inspires disaster as her first husband stalks her and is relentless in his revenge.

In this solo, Helen laments the death and destruction that has been caused by her beauty.

For the first time Martha Graham Dance Company is giving you a chance to ReMash Graham history.

When Martha Graham's Clytemnestra premiered in 1958 it became an instant hit, so it's no surprise that its 2008 revival has followed in its footsteps.

So why stop there? Why not discover 21st century parallels to this Ancient Greek Graham classic.

And why don't you discover them for us?

We have posted five videos online for you to remix, just like the master herself. Each video depicts a character from Trojan War.

You can choose from Helen of Troy, Electra, Clytemnestra, Cassandra, or a more abstract character the Messenger of Death.

Choose one of the characters, take that video, and rework it (remix it, remash it, remaster it, whatever).

Create a modern twist on these ancient characters through current pop culture news, personalities or events.

The possibilities are endless: recast a character in contemporary style, change the music, add a background, learn the movement, develop your own group variation, place your character of choice in another dramatic or cultural context,

Use your 21st century imagination and BRING IT!

Show us your best, and you could win a $500 prize.

The winning video will be featured live at one of our upcoming performances.

The competition opens on February 1st, 2009 and the submissions deadline is March 31, 2009. Winners will be announced on May 11, 2009.

We can't wait to see what you ReMash!

Appalachian Spring Ballet - Martha Graham and the original cast - Aaron Copland boinx12 - 771 views - 3 weeks ago

. . . . . . . . . . .

In 1944, Martha Graham's ballet was filmed in 16mm with the original cast, as a reference tool. Unfortunately, it was shot without sound, and as far as I know no one has attempted to add the score back.

I took the music from the 1958 film included on the 2007 Criterion DVD:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000S FJ4L8

...and tried to match it as closely as I could to the 1944 version (difficult, since the tempo of the '44 version was quite faster than that used in '58).

This is all the footage that was included, in bits and pieces, on the DVD.

Inspired by Martha Graham's "Clytemnestra", this cinematic adaptation delves into the motives and pre-meditation of a woman one the verge of commiting a heinous crime.

It features contemporary dancer, Myra Beltran, in a Manila closer to Graham's time.

Founded in 1926 by dancer and choreographer Martha Graham, the Martha Graham Dance Company is the oldest and most celebrated contemporary dance company in America.

"One of the great companies of the world," according to Anna Kisselgoff, former chief dance critic of The New York Times, the Martha Graham Dance Company has been lauded by critics throughout the world. Alan M. Kriegsman of the Washington Post referred to the Company as "one of the seven wonders of the artistic universe," while Los Angeles Times critic Martin Bernheimer noted, "They seem able to do anything, and to make it look easy as well as poetic." Ismene Brown of The Daily Telegraph, London, touted the Martha Graham Dance Company's performance as "Unmissable," and for Donald Richie of Japan Times these dancers were "Graham's perfect instrument."

What a beuatiful film. I have seen "Diversion of Angels" many times. It was lovely to see it performed at my alma mater taught by my brilliant school mates.

Interlochen is the most special place and Martha Graham' s lagacy must be cherished. How divine to put both of them together. Yay!
