December 25th is an important astrological date and has been the date of various pagan (and other peoples groups) celebrations since before Christ was born.
The church was looking for a day to celebrate the birth of their savior so they picked a day that people already celebrated on.
Jesus was actually probably born in Spring (lambing season, the only reason the shepherds would be watching their flocks at night as described in the story)but it is the event, not the date that is important!
the other traditions influenced what we have today and obviously if people don't agree with the Christian faith then you need something else to do right?
