About this user
The Sheffield Youth Orchestra is a registered charity, and a member of NAYO, and was formed in 1964 to help young local musicians to gain real orchestral experience. It is managed by a council consisting of playing members and their parents.
The Orchestra meets weekly during term time, at Croft House in the centre of Sheffield, and gives between three and five concerts a year with venues selected from local Churches, Schools, and Community Centres and it seeks to give performances City wide.
A great variety of music is performed. The SYO repertoire covers classical and film music with the players often suggesting works they would like to perform.
Regular activities include an annual residential weekend, which is highly enjoyable and important to the ongoing development of the Orchestra both musically and socially.
The age group is predominantly 13-18 years but Associate Membership is open to former players now at University/College, some of whom are in their late 20s. The annual subscription is among the lowest for Youth Orchestras in England
The standard required varies according to the instrument and the number of places available. A quick guide would approximately ABRSM Grade 5, but the conductor's decision is final.
SYO has a playing strength of around 40 members. It is always keen to recruit new players and has a special need for lower strings and brass instruments at the present time.
If you would like to join the Orchestra please send your name, address, date of birth, the instrument that you play and the grade that you have attained to: info@sheffieldyouthorchestra.org
