The only other 3D program I've used is Maya at CCCCD & UTD. I've never used Max, but I've heard it's better than Maya. I've experienced & heard Maya is buggy, crashes, corrupts files, etc. like buggy legacy code built on the same. Microsoft learned w/ Vista. It also performs slow as you mentioned w/ Max. I've heard & observed Maya's "new features" other programs have had for years. This is despite it's render times. In my own tests, C4D was usually 3 times as fast as mentalray, & that was before Maxon cut their own time in 1/2 (in several respects) from R10 to R12. Yet somehow, Maya is the "industry standard" because it has Autodesk slapped on it.
I can't speak for Max. From what you said, it sounds like Max is going the same direction. To date, I haven't found a more reliable & efficient 3D tool like C4D, & thus I use it. However, though waiting to add Python to C4D probably hurt Maxon, at least they didn't rush development resulting in buggy software.
And I'm glad to your comment♪♪
Thank you so much(^o^)v
