I used to have a blog, a good little blog, never hurt nobody. One day back before I joined the temperance league I wound up drinking at Jimmy's Original Southern Pub where I was introduced to the magic elixir known as apple pie shine. I wrote about it in my blog and it was one of the better posts if I do say so myself. The blog has gone the way of all good things, but I remembered enough of what I wrote about that day at Jimmy's to get it in a line and make it rhyme. I would say 95 % of the blogpost is in this song. Performed on my 1947 Gigson tenor uke.
JIMMY'S SOUTHERN PUB IS JUST THE KINDA PLACE I LIKE A LITTLE HIDEAWAY SET BACK OFF OF TAZEWELL PIKE GOOD MUSIC ON THE JUKEBOX, THREE TELEVISION SETS A SIGN THAT SAYS NO STRANGERS HERE, JUST FRIENDS WHO HAVEN'T MET WELL, IT WAS CHRISTMAS WEEK AND WE WERE CRAZY RUNNIN' AROUND MY WIFE AND I'D BEEN SHOPPING, WE'D BEEN ALL OVER TOWN SHE DROPPED ME OFF AT JIMMY'S WHEN I'D HAD ALL I COULD STAND YOU CAN'T HELP BUT LOVE A WOMAN WHO UNDERSTANDS HER MAN (BRIDGE) I WALKED UP TO THE BAR AND I GOT MYSELF A BEER I TOOK A GOOD LONG PULL AND SAT ME DOWN I SAW LOTS OF HARLEY T-SHIRTS AND TENNESSEE HATS AND THESE LITTLE PLASTIC CUPS THEY WERE PASSIN' AROUND (VERSE 2) THE GUY BEHIND THE BAR LOOKED LIKE HE USED TO PLAY FOOTBALL HE DIDN'T KNOW ME FROM ADAM, HE DIDN'T KNOW ME FROM JOHN LAW I RECKON HE THOUGHT I COULD USE A LITTLE CHRISTMAS CHEER AND BEFORE ME A LITTLE PLASTIC CUP DID APPEAR I'M NOT WHAT YOU'D CALL A REGULAR, JUST AN EVERY NOW AND THEN BUT I'VE BEEN TREATED GOOD EVERYTIME THAT I'VE STOPPED IN IT DOES ME GOOD TO KNOW IN THIS TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY THERE'S STILL SUCH A THING AS SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY (BRIDGE) THE GUY SITTIN' NEXT TO ME SAID MAN, THIS STUFF IS SMOOTH HE TOOK A BLISSFUL SIP AND CLOSED HIS EYES I TOOK A SIP MYSELF AND YOU CAN BELIEVE THIS 'CAUSE IT'S TRUE THESE FOLKS WERE DRINKIN' MOONSHINE, TASTED JUST LIKE APPLE PIE (VERSE 3) I CAN'T RECALL WHEN I HAVE TASTED ANYTHING SO SMOOTH YOU KNOW A LOT OF YOUR LOCAL LIQUOR JUST TASTES LIKE ROCKET FUEL BUT THE MAN WHO BREWED THIS STUFF MUSTA REALLY LOVED HIS SHINE CIDER MIXED WITH CINNAMON AND A BIG WARM RUSH BEHIND IT WAS MOSTLY JUST AN OLDER CROWD OF FOLKS THERE SITTIN' AROUND THE ONES JUST PEEKIN' OVER THE HILL AND THE ONES A-WALKIN' DOWN JUST GLAD TO SEE EACH OTHER WITH NOTHING LEFT TO PROVE IN TENNESSEE AT CHRISTMAS TIME SHARING A SPECIAL BREW (BRIDGE) WELL FRIENDS YOU JUST DON'T SEE MANY DAYS LIKE THIS NO MORE TODAY WAS 'BOUT AS GOOD AS THEY GET I COULD SIT RIGHT HERE 'TIL CHRISTMAS AND RING THE NEW YEAR IN DRINKIN' APPLE PIE SHINE WITH THESE FRIENDS I HAVEN'T MET DRINKIN' APPLE PIE SHINE WITH THESE FRIENDS I HAVEN'T MET DRINKIN' APPLE PIE SHINE WITH THESE FRIENDS I HAVEN'T MET

UPDATE : This video is featured on Uketoob.com today! Right next to Eddie vedder! Please visit that fine site here: http://www.uketoob.com/ Thanks Donnie!! i wrote this today. i usually tune my ukes a half-step down (F# B D# G#). being a graduate of the Dylan/Prine Kristofferson Vocal Academy, it gives me a little more room when i sing and takes a little plinkyness out of the uke itself. i always knew i was gonna use "half-step down" for a title. performed on my 1947 gibson tenor uke. Happy National Ukulele Day!!!
half step down, half step down you ain't so far ahead of me i'm just a half step down
i tune a little flat cause i fret a little sharp daddy said thank god the boy never took up the autoharp
half step down, half step down you ain't so far ahead of me i'm just a half step down
only got 4 strings, only use 3 chords you can carry a tune but i can write the words better leave that guitar in it's case take that 6 string razor go shave your face
half step down, half step down you ain't so far ahead of me i'm just a half step down
i tune a little flat cause i fret a little sharp daddy said thank god the boy never took up the autoharp
half step down, half step down you ain't so far ahead of me i'm just a half step down
F# is a half step down from G B is a half step down from C D# is a half step down from E and the G# stands for good lookin'!
half step down, half step down you ain't so far ahead of me i'm just a half step down

I got this song out of a Stefan Grossman's Mississippi John Hurt collection book back in 1994. I think learning this did more for my guitar playing than any other individual thing, But it wasn't easy. It took me about twenty hours to get this down, but once your thumb is working independently from the rest of your fingers, the rest of the Country Blues is a lot easier. This is the place to start, and if you want to go farther, think about attending one of our workshops with Steve James here on Lake Atitlan in Guatemala. And to really focus in, you could download this video and then play it even slower in something like GOM Player.

This is my entry into the 2010 "BringtheSong.org Original Song Video Contest - Thanks Mainland Ukes!
UPDATE 08/13/10: This song is featured today on Uketoob! Please visit that fine site here: http://www.uketoob.com/ Thanks Donnie! don't hang too many hats upon that nail it looks like it might come right off the wall don't hang too many hats upon that nail you may not have hit upon a stud at all
he's told you all the places that he's been he says he'll introduce you to all his uptown friends if he told me the sky was blue i'd look for i believed it's true don't hang too many hats upon that nail
don't hang too many hats upon that nail it looks like it might come right off the wall don't hang too many hats upon that nail you may not have hit upon a stud at all
i know your dreaming of a better life you'd like to marry well and be a rich man's wife if you want to know just what i think he's a nickel shy of a cold drink don't hang too many hats upon that nail
don't hang too many hats upon that nail it looks like it might come right off the wall don't hang too many hats upon that nail you may not have hit upon a stud at all
