Success! This is probably the most challenging thing I've done in Sonic Generations thus far.
Unlike the Rooftop Run mission that is done fully on board, your range of mobility on the board in City Escape is limited. My guess is that Sonic Team limited the range of mobility to prevent you from backtracking, but I'm not completely sure. Completing this run was not only challenging, but tedious. I will now vent/rant/explain about making this video.
First off, lets cover actually making it to the later sections of the level while keeping the board. As you know, when you hit the first non-trick ramp, you will hop off of your board at the height of the ramp jump. In actuality, there is a huge, vertical board deactivating plane that makes you hop off of your board if you come into contact with it. Therefore, your only option is to go over it...easier said than done. With the appropriate skills (acceleration and speed up), you are able to get enough speed and distance via drifting off of the trick ramp on top of the building before the vertical descent. Here is a list of things that can go wrong
1. You don't get enough air, so you hit the board deactivation plane. 2. You get enough air, but go over the wall that's supposed to stop you. 3. You get enough air, but go -through- the wall that's supposed to stop you. 4. You go too far to the left, stopping all of your momentum. 5. You go too far to the right, stopping all of your momentum.
Well how far is too far left and right? Simple, as far left and as far right as you can go when performing the vertical descent -and- as far left and as far right as you can go where the ramp is located. You must be within those boundaries or you will be forced to start over, which burns roughly 30+ seconds between attempts.
So you've made it over, now what? Well luckily you have this video as a reference if you ever feel like doing it for whatever reason. I, however, had to experiment each time I made it over. Oh, there's a catch to it though, touching the checkpoint while on the board will not make you spawn at the checkpoint with the board if you die. Therefore, every time you make it over the board deactivation plane, you have one shot at experimentation before it's back to square one. As I stated earlier, you don't have full mobility with the board, so that makes things much harder than they should be. Here are some of the things that can happen.
1. You're in a corner and get pushed in an undesired direction, thus knocking you into a pit.
2. You do something that crashes the game (like pressing a direction after touching a rainbow hoop).
3. In a 2D section, you reach a wall that will not allow you to turn around.
4. In a 2D section, you get turned around and have no way of being turned back around (and usually end up falling into a pit).
After countless attempts, I finally have a run down. Once you figure everything out, it's not -that- bad, but it's certainly no walk in the park. Enjoy! ^_^
