    Jane Eyre (2011) - The truth | Mr.Rochester & Jane

Best sadly scene of all time.

    supergran1000 supergran1000 commented:

@mariannora After Rochester tells her how he hates the memory of his former mistresses, Jane muses:" I drew from [these words] the certain inference, that if I were so far to forget myself and all the teaching that had ever been instilled into me, as...to become the successor of these poor girls,...

@anayellow1 Completely agree. The text says: "In listening, I sobbed convulsively; for I could repress what I endured no longer; I was obliged to yield, and I was shaken from head to foot with acute distress. When I did speak, it was only to express an impetuous wish that I had never been born, o...

    Jane Eyre - Proposal scene

    Toby Stephens & Ruth Wilson

    supergran1000 supergran1000 commented:

@MorganoftheFaeries Forgive me, Morgano, but I don't understand where you see the lack in Ruth's performance - and where you think Charlotte did better. IMO, Ruth captured the scene from the book perfectly, albeit in an abridged form.

@tarynrose1000 But this isn't the book - it's a TV adaptation which exploits all the VISUAL advantages of film. The screenwriter was Sandy Welch who has as good an understanding of the essence of Jane Eyre than any I've encountered.

My only quibble with this production (aside from the fact that Noel is too young) is the fight between Jean and Joe. Totally made up!

    supergran1000 supergran1000 commented:

@rockyraaacoon It is incongruous because, just prior to this, Rochester says "I must see to my wife" (in the book: "I must shut up my prize") and leaves Jane to return to Bertha's room.

The pleading and "violence" occurs later that afternoon and, admittedly, is a very intense and emotional scene.

@rbain007 Agreed. The gypsy scene, as written, could never be dramatised with credibility. The memory of Timothy Dalton screeching "Off ye lendings!" is not a good one!

The scene in this version was an inspired compromise, and preserved Toby's dignity!

Need to correct you there, LittleGreenLeaves. Pemberley in the 1995 version was Lyme Park on the Cheshire/Derbyshire border. (Interiors were shot at Sudbury Hall in Derbyshire.)

Chatsworth was used in the 2005 film only.
