In 1968 Valerie Solanas, a radical feminist and sometime playwright, attempted to assassinate artist Andy Warhol - accusing him of stealing her ideas and manipulating the freaks & eccentrics who hung around 'the factory'. Solanas served a short prison sentence and her SCUM manifesto (allegedly an acronym leading to this song title) gained a cult reputation. This catchy guitar track by Big in Japan track was recorded in 1978, I think. Although the band achieved little success, all the members went onto greater things - The Liverpool Echo famously quipped that Big In Japan were a "a supergroup with a subtle difference, its members only became super after they left..." The band had an ever changing line-up, but Jayne Casey, Bill Drummond, Holly Johnson, Clive Langer and Ian Broudie all played a role in this unique, adorable new wave set from my birth city. Incidentally, this track is lifted from a wonderful compilation album of Scouse scene guitar bands called 'To The Shore of Lake Placid' - well worth hunting down... I can't say much about the creepy video. I got it in a tape trade - hidden at the end of a fine German TV 'Talking Heads' concert - I guess it was made by a supremely talented (and mentally disturbed) animator. I have changed a few things in the edit, but this is all the jaw dropping virtuoso, stop motion work of a person who needs their medication increasing. (less info)
