"Give it To Me" surprisingly did not chart in the Top 10, reaching #30 on the Billboard charts when it was released on The J. Geils Band's 1973 album Bloodshot. The main reason why this song most likely did not reach #1 on the charts is only because of it's "suggestive lyrics" .Keep in mind, this was back in 1973 when most hit songs did not have lyrics that were so blatant like these here. Yes, I know Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On" came out the same year and it did chart higher, but I still think this song is much funkier!
Nonetheless, this song has always been one of the Geils most beloved tunes. Their live versions of this song reach epic proportions...I have seen them perform this live...it is the best, bar none! The funky breakdown starting around 2:55 that lasts through the rest of the song is one of the best breakdowns in rock and roll history. Each band member gets to shine as Magic Dick solos with his incomparable harmonica licks. Then J.Geils himself does a killer guitar solo right after. And if you can't notice Danny Kleins' disgusting bass line throughout all of this then you should just quit while you're ahead! It's such a memorable groove, not to mention one you can't get out of your head!
"Give it To Me" is my favorite party track ever. I love the reggae influence in the first part of the song. It's important to note that a rock band using any reggae sound back in 1973 was close to unheard of as Reggae was just beginning to gain substantial appeal in the U.S due in large part to Bob Marley becoming more and more noticed.
This song goes to show how ahead of their time the Geils crew was. The organ solo that transitions the reggae part with the breakdown/outro is awesome too and has a 1960's hippie psychedelic sound in it. So sit back, relax and enjoy this gem by Boston's very own, not to mention my beloved hometown as well, The J. Geils Band! Not many songs get Funkier than this one!
Lyrics:
Now don't touch the knobs 'cause I think We're going to have some fun with this one here Oh yeah!
You've got to give it to me You've got to give it to me You've got to give it to me You've got to give it to me
You're so slick hun, know every trick now You know I want it, I want it so bad You know I need it, I can't believe it So come on baby, Please relieve it
You've got to give it to me You've got to give it to me (Mmm, hmm) You've got to give it to me You've got to give it to me
Now you've been bugging me, Every night now You say you want it, You want it right now I can't get to it, I can't get through it So come on baby, Please
You've got to get it up (give it up) You've got to get it up (give it up) You've got to get it up (give it up) You've got to get it up (give it up)
You've got to give it to me You've got to give it to me You've got to give it to me You've got to give it to me
Why keep me cold When it's so warm inside Come on baby Your love is too good to hide"
