That's the entry to the first north rapid. There are two. Climbing out the south rapid is steeper as it is a single drop. Write this down somewhere: "Don't enter the north end earlier than one hour before high slack.

I first flew Si with Dick Gammon, Dennis Rasmussun, Jambo and Murf in February '76. No snow that Winter. We launched from the base of the Haystack. It was 70 degrees on top and 40 in the LZ. Thick fog about 200' deep. I bought my 4x4 to fly that mountain and made the most of it.
