1- he secretley hates his child and deep down has wanted to do this for awhile.

2- he believes his child is a terrorist, this is his interrogation technique.

@haddonfield04 I think you hit the nail on the head. I believe the message of the mockumentary is being lost in the fact that it was an act, which, even more to the point, drives home the message that Pheonix was making. It just seems lost on Dave.
