Les has always been one of my favorite drummers, glad to see this video, hope more with the big band can be posted. Harry James called Les his favorite and best drummer he ever had, quite a compliment considering all the great ones he had, including Buddy.

What CD is this off of, i thought i had all the CD's with this band but it's not on any i have. It is on the CD A Portrait of Sammy, but that is a compilation of songs from other CDs.

Who recorded this song first, it seems it has been around quite awhile and is familiar, but i can't think who it was.

A Sammy Nestico chart, nobody writes or arranges better swinging tunes than Sammy. Check out his CD's with this SWR big band, he has done several. He says he loves this band and they are a fabulous swinging organization.

Buddy certainly shows that he can play match grip style even though he always said that traditional grip was the best. Match works very well on a song like Caravan where there usually is alot of tom tom rhythms.

great band especially with Buddy Rich providing the drive. He said he didn't like playing the same old popular commercial numbers like when they were home in Vegas. They played the more up tempo swinging charts when they were on the road.

One of the best big bands of all time, you would swear it was Basie. Frank Capp also one of the all time greats. I wish there were more vids of this band in action.

I wish they had not chosen this name the Capp Pierce Juggernaut and later just the Frank Capp Juggernaut were the JUGGERNAUT BANDS.

I think this was the best of the many band leader movies that they made in the 50's. The Glenn Miller story was pretty much on par with with this one. Being a drummer i of course loved The Gene Krupa Story, but as a good movie it couldn't compete with these two.

Did you ever notice Buddy rarely looked at the drums when he soloed or played breaks. It seemed that he looked off to the left alot, great concentration and awareness of where everything was.

I agree about missing Butch Miles who was my all time favorite Basie drummer. Jo Jones seems to be playing quite abit in his old 40's style with alot of the rhythm played on the hi-hats. Just doesn't work as well in modern big band jazz, not as much dynamics or propulsion.

This is the first and only drummer that i've ever heard that played the melody of this song on the drums. It sounds like a whole band is playing but he is getting the same sound out of the drums and a small basic kit at that. Gene was great at this song but even he didn't get all the melody parts...
