POWDERMONKEY -- The A-maze-ing Slumber Party, Kalgoorlie, October 2009
22 young dancers (aged 8 -- 13 years) from social, economic and culturally diverse backgrounds in the Kalgoorlie-Boulder region, located 595 km east-northeast of Perth, took part in a two week residency with STEPS Youth Dance Company. Working in a professional theatre setting, they developed POWDERMONKEY -- The A-maze-ing Slumber Party, an original contemporary dance piece inspired by the skewiff, quirky and unpredictable nature of dreams.
Led by STEPS' Artistic Director Alice Lee Holland and choreographer/performers Josh Mu and Jessica Lewis, the young cast members were given the invaluable opportunity to explore and share their creative ideas to help create the work, which as a result included zombies, an enchanted maze and the world's biggest slumber party! The residency culminated in a Sold Out Schools performance and General Public performance that engaged the community in a unique youth inspired contemporary performance piece.
In the lead up to the residency, more than 1500 young people from at least 12 different government and non-government schools took part in free workshops with STEPS, which provided these young people with an emotionally and physically safe environment to explore and engage with the arts, and as a result helped them develop skills of teamwork, commitment and communication.

FREERANGE offers dancers an extraordinary and intensive skills-building experience -- in dancing and dance making -- amongst like-minded young dancers, guided by industry professionals.
FREERANGE 2010 was led by STEPS' Artistic Director Alice Lee Holland and independent Australian dance artist Josh Mu (Shaun Parker Company, Force Majeure, Buzz Dance Theatre).
Alice has been the Artistic Director of STEPS since 2009 and has created a number works for the company including PHOENIX (2010) and moonwebs & scorched thongs (2009). Alice works with a distinctively physical contemporary dance style that focuses on floor work and fearlessness, and incorporates dance theatre to make work about real people and real life.
Josh has been a professional dancer for four years and has worked around the country for companies including Shaun Parker Company, Force Majeure, Buzz Dance Theatre and Perth Theatre Company. As well as being a WAAPA graduate, Josh has a background in hip-hop and break dance, which informs his movement to create a unique and interesting style.
The FREERANGE workshops were divided into two groups, morning (9am -- 12:30pm) and afternoon (1:30pm -- 5pm). Each workshop involved a contemporary dance warm up/technique class, learning movement repertoire choreographed by the mentors as well as creative task work to develop dance-making skills.

PHOENIX is a stunning new contemporary dance piece that imagines the end of the world, and new beginnings. The production is performed by 32 young dancers from Perth and features aerial acrobatics, beautiful dance and strong theatrics.
Picture yourself standing on the edge... the edge of something new, of change, of the unknown. PHOENIX visualises the apocalypse. The streets are dense with people maddened by the inevitability of the end; all that they have and all that they know, is threatened. In the midst of the chaos, one young man stands still, poised right on the edge of the world. He looks at the madness around him, then to the blackness of the unknown. He steps forward, and begins to fall...A handful of survivors have made it through, surrounded by remnants of what is now that past. What will they choose to keep? What will they leave behind? How will this shape their new world?"
